How to incorporate Biophilic Interior Design Into Your Home

Biophilic interior design is a concept that has grown in popularity over the last few years and is a trend I have been seeing a lot and something I try to incorporate into my designs. You may be asking what is biophilic design? Well it's all about bringing the outside in, creating a sense of connection and harmony between our homes and nature. You can do this by incorporating elements such as plants, natural materials, and colours inspired by the outdoors. Biophilic design aims to improve our well-being, productivity, and overall quality of life.

So, what exactly is biophilic design, and how can it be incorporated into our homes?

Biophilic interior design is all about creating spaces that reflect our connection to nature. This can include everything from incorporating natural materials like wood, rattan, linen and stone, to using earthy colours and patterns that evoke the outdoors, to bringing in living plants and other elements of nature.

Why Biophilic Interior Design Matters?

There are lots of reasons why biophilic interior design is a great approach to interiors. In my opinion, the most important reason is that it can have a significant impact on our health and well-being. Studies have shown that exposure to nature can help to reduce stress and boost our immune system.

Incorporating biophilic design elements into our interior spaces can also help us to feel more connected to the natural world, even when we're inside. This can have a calming and grounding effect, which can make us feel more relaxed.

In addition, biophilic interior design can be a sustainable choice. By using natural materials and incorporating living plants into our spaces, we can reduce our reliance on synthetic materials and artificial lighting, which can have a negative impact on the environment.

How to Incorporate Biophilic Interior Design in your home?

If you're interested in bringing biophilic design into your home or office, there are many different ways to do so. Here are a few ideas for you to take this approach in your home.

1. Use Plants

Adding living plants to your home is one of the easiest ways to incorporate biophilic design. Choose plants that are easy to care for and that thrive indoors, such as snake plants, pothos, and peace lilies. My go to shop for plants is PATCH PLANTS. Plants are known to lower stress and anxiety and increase your healing and pain tolerance. They can improve air quality which reduces the chance of headaches, this is why they are so good to have them in your home office. Here are some fabulous home office design tips.

2. Use natural materials

Incorporating natural materials such as wood, stone, linen and wool, silk, rattan and marble can help to create a sense of warmth and connection to the outdoors. Different material choices can create a different feel. Silk and marble is more elegant to rattan and wool which is more rustic. Consider using these materials in furniture, flooring, accessories and your window treatments. This type of wood panelling is a great way to add texture to a space and is also great for softening acoustics. This wood panelling was super easy to use from NATURE WALL.

3. Maximise natural light

Natural light is one of the most important elements of biophilic design. Maximise the amount of natural light in your space by using sheer curtains, choosing light-coloured walls, and arranging furniture to take advantage of windows.

4. Create a nature-inspired focal point

A nature-inspired focal point, such as a large indoor plant or a nature-inspired art piece like this living shelf, can help to draw the eye and create a sense of connection to the natural world. Ideally it’s best to use real plants but for this girls bedroom design we used some faux plants for easy maintenance, the picture shelf and plants in this bedroom are from IKEA.

In conclusion

Biophilic interior design is a powerful concept that can have a significant impact on our health, well-being, and connection to the natural world. By incorporating elements like living plants, natural materials, and earthy colours into our interior spaces, we can create a sense of harmony and balance that can help us to feel more at home in our surroundings.
